Lesson
• Watch John Henry video (21 minutes)
Dear 4th graders,
Watch this video about John Henry. If time permits, share what you notice about the story. Contrast this with our ballad: what details are different? What was the irony or surprise twist at the end of this version?
Be good, be attentive, and make connections.
Enjoy!

P.S. It is after 4th grade choir, so if you are reading this, I know you want to learn more about John Henry. Here is the LINK to the wonderful company that made this movie.
Hello 4th graders,
After we absorbed and contrasted the John Henry film with our ballad, I wrote the film company a letter.
Here is what I wrote:
Dear Creative People at Whitestone,
I am a music teacher in Minnesota. My fourth graders finished John Henry's ballad and wanted to know more. I found your wonderful John Henry film to share with them.
They were enthralled with everything: the story line, the live action, the music, and especially the ironies at the end. They watched, leaning forward, cringing at parts that gripped them, and tapping toes with the song. We had a rich discussion afterwards.
Thank you for an excellent film. Thank you for a clean film that I can show children, and thank you for a film that does not talk down to children. Bravo!
